Recycle
Sustainability incorporates principles related to the efficient use of materials and waste minimization. Materials use and waste minimization are summarized with the
"3 Rs" - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Recycling Committee
The Muskegon Area Sustainability Coalition identified recycling as a way to show the local community how to put sustainability into practice in businesses, households, and organizations.  Increasing recycling could bring new businesses to the area to process and use the recycled materials and create new jobs. Environmental integrity could also be enhanced as more recycling would reduce the amount of waste entering local landfills or being dumped illegally.

To prove the potential results of more recycling, it would be necessary first to know the current level of recycling in Muskegon County.  The Recycling Committee of the Muskegon Area Sustainability Coalition was formed and charged with the task of completing a baseline study of recycling in Muskegon County.

The intent of the study was to:

  • Identify and quantify the recycling efforts currently taking place in Muskegon County
  • Quantify the volume of recycling that currently occurs
  • Map the flow of waste materials
  • Identify current gaps in service and potential linkages that may close those gaps

The Recycling Baseline study is now complete. A summary and the full report are available for download below.
